Tom Spencer withdraws; endorses Joe Larkin (MI-11)

The following is an excerpt from an email I received tonight from Tom Spencer:

March 27, 2008

Dear Friends and Supporters:

The upcoming election is one of the most important elections to come along in a long time. It will determine the future of this country as a republic based on the rule of law and not on the rule of men. For several years now this District has not had a representative that represented the people and as I visited with people in the District, I found that to be one of the most important issues people were disgruntled with.
It is time for us to take back the seat that Mr. McCotter has held and abused and give it back to the people. This election isn’t about me or other single person; it is about the future of our District, State, and Federal Government. In other words, it is about our people and their future. I feel it is important that we get behind someone that truly has the ability to beat Mr. McCotter in the upcoming election and that is why I am throwing my whole-hearted support behind Joe Larkin. He is a progressive Democrat with connections to the party for many years. But even more important, he wants to represent the people of the District and do what is best for our country.
I am asking for those who have supported me in the past and who signed my petitions to give their support to Joe. It will be a hard fight to overcome the entrenched candidate, but I feel Joe is the one to do it. I plan to continue to work to remove Mr. McCotter from office in anyway that I can. Thanks again for all your support and kind words of encouragement over the past several months.
Thomas K. Spencer
The McCotter Monitor wishes to thank Tom Spencer wholeheartedly for his efforts thusfar. It is shameful, the lack of urgency displayed by local, state and national Party leaders, towards mounting a serious challenge against Thaddeus McCotter. Tom Spencer jumped into the race head first and all alone, and this District will be all the better for his campaign. He is a good man, and could be a great candidate for any office he chooses.

I am tired of e-mails from Mark Schauer and Gary Peters - there is room in Michigan for another competitive race, and I hope that the Larkin campaign can grab on to some of the momentum those two candidates have built up. You have my email address.

At this point, who stands a better chance of ousting McCotter: Larkin or Kriewall? And, realistically, how good do you think their chances are?

I know very little about this district and even less about McCotter's challengers, so any thoughts you can provide will be of interest to me.

Chris, thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. The district, quite honestly, is very Republican. It has been trending more to the middle, however, so there is hope for any good candidate. I feel that one of the reasons McCotter has done so well is simply that people are unaware of how ridiculously right-wing he is. That's why I am here!

Kriewall has a good pedigree, and makes a good candidate on paper. I haven't seen the necessary effort or enthusiasm from his campaign that it will take to make a serious challenge. Larkin seems to have a good network of support from the local Democratic party, so he may be the one who can do the groundwork needed to spread the word. I personally hope that an agreement can be made well in advance of the primary, so that more time can be spent focusing on challenging McCotter - and not each other.

I am confused. Didn't the primary leave us with only one Democratic candidate? If not, how and when does the political process leave us with one candidate to support?

Anonymous - the recent primary election was only for the Presidential race, if that is what you are referring to. There is a primary election in August, where all other races get whittled down. There may be primary races for your particular State Rep, judges, and yes Congressman. Many of those campaigns are just now shaping up. I know I will be working with a campaign for a County Commissioner who could face three others in a primary.

Thanks for stopping by!
